Tuning the QMWheel V20 Cross: complete guide (2026)

The QMWheel V20 Cross is the boldest looking bike in the V20 range: the same technology as the well-known V20, but with the appearance of a motocross machine. And like the rest of the family, it leaves the factory neatly restricted to 25 km/h. Want more on private grounds? Then a tunable controller plus a tunable H6C display is the route that works. Below you'll read which ones you need, how to recognise the right ones and what to watch out for.

Complete tuning set

You always need a tunable controller and a tunable display. This way you order both in one go.

In short

  • The V20 Cross shares its electronics with the V20 and V20 Pro
  • Tunable up to 45 km/h, no higher
  • You need the tunable controller with the red motor plug (21A, 500W)
  • Always check the colour of your motor plug first: red fits red, black fits black
  • You need two parts: the V20 Cross controller and the tunable H6C display (5-pin). The restricted display has no unlock code, so with it the bike stays at 25 km/h

What exactly is the QMWheel V20 Cross?

The V20 Cross is a version within QMWheel's V20 range. The difference from the standard V20 and the V20 Pro lies mainly in the looks and the finish. Under the skin the story is largely the same: the same build, the same plug standard and the same factory limiter. That's good news, because it means the parts from the V20 family will fit in most cases.

You can buy it new from us in two versions: the QMWheel V20 Cross - Black as Restricted (25 km/h, for public roads) or as Tunable, with the controller and the H6C display already included. This guide is for anyone who already has a restricted Cross and wants to tune it themselves, or is replacing a faulty controller.

Why can the V20 Cross be tuned?

The limiter isn't in the motor, but in the controller's software. That controller determines how much current may go to the motor and up to what speed it assists. The motor itself can do more than the factory allows. Replace the controller with a tunable version and add a tunable H6C display, and that ceiling disappears, so the bike pulls on up to 45 km/h. The controller delivers the power, the display contains the unlock code and the kill switch.

Which controller do you need?

For the red motor plug, that is the V20 Cross controller: 21A, 500W, five connections without alarm, article number FBK-CTR-V20CROSS-OV-RD-01. It comes out of the box restricted. You switch on the 45 km/h on the display, not on the controller.

Do note that 45 km/h really is the maximum for this bike. You'll occasionally read about 60 km/h online, but that belongs to the GT2000 and that controller doesn't fit here.

Red or black: how to tell which plug you have

Before you order, take the battery off and find the thick cable running from the motor to the frame. Where that cable enters the frame sits the motor plug. It's either red or black, and that colour determines which controller you need.

Not sure which one you're looking at? Send us a photo of the plug and we'll take a look with you. All the options are together in the controllers collection.

Fitting it, in brief

The job is doable if you're handy with tools. Roughly speaking:

  • Battery off and the bike de-energised. Never skip this.
  • Open the frame or controller cover and expose the old controller.
  • Disconnect all the plugs and photograph how everything was fitted.
  • Move the plugs over to the new controller one by one. They're coded by colour and shape, so there's little you can get wrong.
  • Battery on, display on, and take a gentle test ride before you screw everything shut.

This is deliberately a rough order of work and not a full workshop manual. Every bike is put together slightly differently. If you're in doubt, have a bike mechanic do it.

Tuning the V20 Cross in six steps: controller and display

Step 1. Bike off, battery out, and check the colour of your motor plug (on the inside, by the pins). Step 2. Remove the saddle: the controller sits underneath. Take a photo of all the connections before you disconnect anything. Step 3. Move the five cables over to the V20 Cross controller one by one. The plugs are coded by colour and shape. Step 4. On the handlebars, disconnect the display's 5-pin plug, unscrew the clamp bracket and fit the tunable H6C display in the same place. Push the plug in straight, without force, so the pins don't bend. Step 5. Battery in, bike on, and first a short test ride in restricted mode: does everything run, does the throttle work up to 6 km/h, do you see no error code? Step 6. Enter the unlock code on the display (it is on the display's product page). From that moment the bike assists up to 45 km/h, only on private or enclosed grounds. With the kill switch you set it back to 25 km/h before you go out on public roads.

Setting the speed: unlock code and kill switch

You set the speed on the tunable H6C display, not on the controller and not with an app. After fitting, you enter the unlock code once; after that the kill switch toggles between 25 and 45 km/h without a code. The display fitted to the bike as standard doesn't have that setting. So if you see a code for the H6C display for sale online, it unlocks nothing on a restricted display. Please note: 45 km/h is the maximum for the V20 Cross. A controller that promises 50 or 60 km/h belongs to a different model or isn't an original part.

Tuning not working: seven checks

1. Plug colour: red on red, black on black. The wrong colour means it won't fit or won't work. 2. Replaced both? With only the controller, the display stays at 25 km/h. 3. Original display? You can recognise a fake H6C by code 3330, a black arrow, a dark green connector and five assist levels; it doesn't communicate properly with the controller. 4. Kill switch: if it's set to restricted, switch it over. 5. Unlock code entered? 6. Plugs: all five cables and the 5-pin display plug pushed in straight and all the way, no bent pins, no pulled cable tie pinching the cable. 7. Error code on the display? Note it down and send a photo of the display, controller and motor plug via WhatsApp; we'll take a look with you before you send anything back.

Original or AliExpress?

A cheap V20 controller from AliExpress or Marktplaats looks like the original, but often has a different plug colour, a different number of connections or different software. Then it doesn't fit, or it throws error codes that make no sense. An original V20 Cross controller has the red motor plug, five connections without alarm and the software that matches the H6C display. Not sure whether something you saw elsewhere is original? Send a photo via WhatsApp.

Which display do you need?

Yes, a tunable display is part of the kit. The V20 Cross takes the tunable H6C display with 5-pin plug. If your bike currently starts with an NFC card, choose the NFC version. That display contains the unlock code and the kill switch; without that display the bike stays at 25 km/h, even with the tunable controller fitted. If you're only replacing a broken controller and want to keep riding restricted, your original screen simply keeps working.

Is a V20 Cross legal?

Yes, as long as it's restricted. In the Restricted version, the QMWheel V20 Cross is an electric bike with pedal assist up to 25 km/h and a throttle that only helps up to 6 km/h; that means you can ride it on public roads in the Netherlands and Belgium without a driving licence, number plate or mandatory helmet. As soon as you tune it to 45 km/h, on public roads it is no longer a bike but an uninsured motor vehicle: a fine, confiscation and no cover in an accident. Riding tuned therefore belongs only on private grounds or on enclosed grounds you have permission for. Set your bike back to restricted with the kill switch before you take it on the road.

Frequently asked questions

Does the V20 Cross reach 60 km/h too?

No. With the tunable controller you'll get up to 45 km/h. The 60 km/h you sometimes come across belongs to the GT2000, which is a different motor and a different controller.

Does the standard V20 controller fit the Cross as well?

Yes, provided the plug colour matches. The V20 Cross uses the same tunable controller with red motor plug as the V20 and V20 Pro. We've made a separate page for it, because Cross riders often wonder whether V20 parts actually fit their bike; everything Cross-specific is together there.

Is there an app to tune the V20 Cross?

No. The QMWheel V20 Cross has no Bluetooth connection and no app that lets you adjust the speed. The limiter is in the controller and the display, and you only change that by replacing both with tunable versions. Apps you come across online belong to other brands and do nothing on a QMWheel.

Do I need the H6C display with or without NFC?

Look at your current screen. If your bike currently starts only with an NFC card, you have the latest generation and you choose the tunable H6C display with NFC, so the card keeps working. If your bike starts normally with the power button, take the tunable H6C display without NFC. Both have the 5-pin plug, the kill switch and the unlock code.

Will my throttle keep working?

If your bike has a throttle, you simply connect it back up to the new controller. If there wasn't one on it, a new controller won't add one by itself.

Getting started yourself

You'll find all the kits together in the tuning kits collection. If you don't yet know which part belongs to your bike, run through the product finder.
