Rules for e-bikes and fatbikes in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, an e-bike or fatbike is an ordinary electric bicycle if the motor assists you up to a maximum of 25 km/h and delivers a maximum of 250 watts. You then do not need a driving licence, number plate or third-party liability insurance, a helmet is not mandatory and there is no minimum age. May a fatbike have a throttle?

Speed pedelec

What applies to a speed pedelec?

Plans that do not yet apply

Will there be a helmet requirement for fatbikes?

The government plans to introduce a helmet requirement on fatbikes and other e-bikes for young people up to 18. It does not apply yet: the House of Representatives and the Senate must approve it first.
